What is Iris?
Iris is a Japanese dictionary and reader for desktop Google Chrome. Point at any Japanese word on a website, in video subtitles, in a PDF or in Google Docs to see its kana reading, romaji, meaning, JLPT level and pitch accent.
Is Iris free?
Yes. Reading, word lookup, saving words and daily review are free and need no account. Iris Pro adds Japanese writing help in Gmail and Google Chat, Google Meet caption capture, every page of your PDFs, reading of stylized text in images and vocabulary sync.
Does Iris send the pages I read to a server?
No. The Japanese dictionary is built into the extension, so word lookups stay on your device. Writing help and meeting analysis use cloud AI only when you ask for them.
Which languages does Iris support?
Word meanings come in English, Spanish, French or German. The interface is in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai, and sentence translation uses your language when Chrome supports it.
Can I look up words in YouTube, Netflix or Prime Video subtitles?
Yes, with Iris Live. Point at a word in the Japanese subtitles and the video pauses while you read; move away and it plays on. The video needs Japanese subtitles, and on YouTube you can replay any recent line.
Does Iris show JLPT levels and pitch accent?
Yes. The word card shows the JLPT level (N5 to N1) and the pitch accent when the dictionary has them, next to the kana reading and romaji.
Can I export my words to Anki?
Yes. Iris saves each word with its sentence and source, schedules a short daily review with FSRS, and exports to Anki through AnkiConnect or to CSV and JSON.
Does Iris work with PDFs and images?
Yes. Japanese PDFs open in the Iris reader with the first 5 pages of each PDF free, and Iris reads Japanese text in images on your device, 5 images a day. Pro reads every PDF page.
Is there a mobile app?
No. Iris is an extension for Google Chrome on desktop computers.
