IRIS · THE EYE FOR JAPANESE

Your reading stays with you.

Iris separates local reading from cloud services. This policy describes the new Iris application.

Local reading

Japanese tokenization, dictionary lookup, JLPT levels, pitch accent, saved transcripts, PDFs, text read from images and scanned pages, and vocabulary reviews run on your device. Iris does not send the pages you read to its servers for coloring.

Study Studio

Imported readings, books, saved sentences, source links, word stages, and sentence practice history stay on this device. Selected local video and audio files play without upload. EPUB and PDF extraction happens locally. Read-aloud uses an installed Japanese system voice; sentence translation uses Chrome’s local model and may require a download. External discovery links open independent websites with their own policies.

First meaning timing

Iris stores installation-to-first-definition timing locally, with separate walkthrough and webpage milestones. You can export these timings in Settings; they are not uploaded.

Cloud features you request

When you request a draft, meeting analysis, or a sharper cloud reading of an image, the selected content (for an image, a compressed copy of that one image) is sent through Iris to Google’s Gemini API, either directly or through Vercel AI Gateway. Iris does not store the content in its application database or request logs. Google processes requests under its applicable API terms; Iris does not promise zero provider retention.

Your account and paid sync

Supabase stores your account and, when you enable paid sync, saved dictionary vocabulary and review events. Meeting transcripts, source URLs, source sentences, and assignments do not sync. Paddle processes payments and stores your billing records.

Classes and shared lists

Teacher Mode is optional and needs an account. When you join a class, its teacher sees the display name you choose and when you joined. Nothing else is shared unless you turn on sharing for that class. Then Iris sends daily totals (words saved, reviews done, words remembered) and, only if you also choose it, how many of the teacher’s own list words you have saved and remembered. It never shares your saved words, sentences, pages or review answers. Turning sharing off, leaving the class or being removed deletes what that class received, and shared totals are kept for at most 90 days. Class names, codes and lists are stored in Iris’s database. Anyone with a public list link can see that list’s words, but not who made it. The Iris website can ask the extension only to open a list for you to review; nothing is added to My Sky until you confirm.

Sharing and referral offers

Ordinary sharing needs no account and includes no private content. If you join a referral offer, Iris keeps your account, claim, reward, and payment references to honor offers and prevent duplicate rewards. Referrers see aggregate reward amounts, not a friend’s payment or activity history. Referral records are separate from optional analytics. Contact support to close an account with referral records.

Optional measurement

With your permission, Iris collects content-free feature events and your latest settings choices. Excluded sites are reported only as a count range, never as domain names. It does not collect raw emails, page text, saved words, or meeting content for analytics. Turn measurement off in your account to delete optional events and settings samples. Operational usage and billing records remain necessary to provide paid services.

Anonymous usage counts

Unless you turn off Share anonymous usage counts in Iris Settings, the extension sends one summary for each day you use it: how many times each feature was used (such as word lookups, saves and reviews), the totals and busiest day of the last seven days for a few reading features, which features you used for the first time, the Iris version, your browser’s interface language, the date Iris was installed and how many days have passed since you last used it. If Iris was installed from a tagged link to its store page or this website, the summary also carries that link’s campaign tag; Iris reads it once, at installation, from the open Iris tab. If an experiment is running, the summary names the group your Iris is in; the group is chosen on your device from a random key that never leaves it. The summary has no account, device or browser identifier, and no page text, words, sentences or website addresses. Iris adds it to daily totals instead of keeping it as a record of your device. When Iris is installed it sends one count with its version, language and any campaign tag. When it is removed, Chrome opens a goodbye page that counts the removal and lets you say why you left, if you want to.

Ad clicks

If you open the Iris website from one of our Google ads, its address carries a click ID that Google adds to the ad link. When Iris is not installed yet, the website asks once whether we may tell Google Ads about your install and, if you later buy Iris Unlimited in the same browser, its price before tax. Only if you agree, the website keeps the click ID in this browser for up to 90 days, reports the install when it sees Iris installed while an Iris page is open, and sends the click ID with your Unlimited checkout so our server can report the purchase. We pass these events to Google Ads so it can show our ads to people who find Iris useful. Nothing else is sent with them: no account, email, page text, words or website addresses, and the click ID never goes to Paddle. The Iris extension never reads or sends ad click IDs. If you decline, nothing is kept or sent. We delete our copies after 90 days, and you can withdraw here at any time.

Free limits and offers

Iris downloads its current free limits, offers and experiments from irislanguage.com as plain settings, without any identifier, and counts your free uses on your device. When you buy Unlimited or Pro from an offer in Iris, the purchase records the campaign tag, experiment groups, installation date and which limit led to it, so we can learn which offers and campaigns help readers. It never includes page text, words or website addresses.

The Iris mobile app

Iris for iPhone, iPad and Android analyzes Japanese entirely on your device: subtitles, manga pages (read with the phone’s own text recognition), pasted text and books never leave it. Saved words, sentences, reviews, your own videos and imported manga stay in the app’s storage on your device until you delete them or the app. Read-aloud uses your device’s Japanese voice. The app has no analytics or advertising and does not track you. Without an account it sends nothing about you to Iris; it only downloads community videos and their subtitles when you open them, and YouTube streams those videos under Google’s own terms and privacy policy.

Community videos

Sharing a video needs an account (Sign in with Apple or Google), so others can report a problem and Iris can act on it. When you share, Iris stores the YouTube link, the subtitles and translation you provide, your title, note and level, and the first name from your sign-in as the name other learners see. Reports store the reason you choose, any note you add and a random number that identifies the app install, not you. Delete a video you shared from the app at any time; deleting your account in the app deletes your account and every video you shared.

Control and retention

Export and delete local data in My Sky. Export, restore, and remove readings and sentences in Study Studio. Keep a backup before uninstalling, which removes local data. Export cloud data or request account deletion in your account. Optional raw product events are retained for up to 90 days. Only your latest settings sample is kept, until you turn measurement off or delete your account. Billing records may need to be retained for financial recordkeeping.
